Rohit Sharma Announces Retirement from Test Captaincy
Varanasi, India – In a significant development for Indian cricket, Rohit Sharma has announced his retirement from Test captaincy. The announcement comes via his Instagram account, just ahead of India’s scheduled five-match Test tour to England.

Sources suggest that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) was considering removing the 38-year-old from the leadership role due to concerns over his recent red-ball performances. While Sharma had earlier expressed his eagerness to lead the likes of Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, and Mohammed Shami in the upcoming series against England, and even mentioned his desire to continue after the fifth Test against Australia, it appears the board was not entirely convinced by his form. Sharma had faced challenges in the home series against New Zealand and also in Australia, where he even had to drop himself from the playing eleven at one point.

In his Instagram post, Rohit Sharma thanked his fans for their unwavering support throughout his Test career. “Hello everyone, I would just like to share that I am retiring from Test cricket. It’s been an absolute honour to represent my country in whites. Thank you for all the love and support over the years. I will continue to represent India in the ODI format,” he stated.

With Rohit stepping down, the question now turns to who will take over the reins of the Test team. Several names are being discussed as potential successors. Shubman Gill has been a prominent name in recent conversations. Notably, in Rohit’s absence, Jasprit Bumrah led the team to a memorable victory against Australia in Adelaide. However, his fitness concerns might make the selectors hesitant to appoint him as a full-time captain. Other options that the BCCI could consider include Rishabh Pant and KL Rahul.

Rohit Sharma made his Test debut against West Indies in November 2013 at Eden Gardens, marking the occasion with a brilliant 177-run innings. India won that match by an innings and 51 runs, a game that was also significant as it was Sachin Tendulkar’s penultimate Test appearance. Throughout his Test career, Rohit played 67 matches, accumulating 4301 runs at an average of 40.57.
