Delhi Transport Dept Makes Color-Coded Stickers Mandatory for Vehicles; Violators to Face Penalty

New Delhi – A major update for vehicle owners in Delhi: the Transport Department has made it mandatory for all vehicles to display color-coded fuel type stickers on their windshields. The move comes as part of efforts to ensure compliance with the High-Security Registration Plate (HSRP) system and improve enforcement of pollution-related regulations in the capital.

According to a public notice issued on Sunday, the color-coded stickers are a mandatory element under the Motor Vehicles Order, 2018, and will now be strictly enforced under Section 192(1) of the Motor Vehicles Act. Vehicles found without these stickers will be subject to fines.

The Transport Department clarified that these stickers are not new but were made compulsory along with HSRPs back in 2019. They serve as a third registration mark to help authorities quickly identify the fuel type of vehicles, especially during implementation of pollution control measures like the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP).

Here’s how the color coding works:

  • Orange: Diesel vehicles
  • Blue: Petrol and CNG vehicles
  • Grey: Other fuel types (including electric or hybrid, if specified)

Officials also confirmed that vehicles lacking these stickers will not be issued Pollution Under Control (PUC) certificates.

The HSRP and sticker rule, implemented in April 2019 for new vehicles, was later extended to older vehicles across Delhi. In 2020, the government had launched a drive to penalize violators, with fines reaching up to ₹5,000 for non-compliance.

The Transport Department has urged all vehicle owners to ensure that their vehicles are fitted with both HSRP and the appropriate color-coded sticker to avoid penalties and contribute to better pollution control enforcement in the city.
