New Delhi- Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla called on newly elected members of the Delhi Legislative Assembly to transform the Assembly into a model legislature, emphasizing their heightened responsibility to meet public expectations.
Speaking at the inaugural session of a two-day Orientation Programme for Members of the Delhi Vidhan Sabha, organized by Delhi Vidhan Sabha and the Parliamentary Research and Training Institute for Democracies (PRIDE), Shri Birla urged the MLAs to work beyond their constituencies and focus on the holistic development of Delhi.
Highlighting Delhi’s unique diversity, Birla stated that the capital is a microcosm of India, representing various cultures, languages, and traditions. He stressed that the solutions devised in Delhi could set a precedent for other states. The Speaker underlined the importance of upholding democratic values and adhering to the rules and procedures of the House while ensuring meaningful dialogue and dignified dissent.
Addressing the need for innovation, Birla encouraged members to harness technology and Artificial Intelligence (AI) to enhance legislative effectiveness. He further emphasized that effective public representatives should be good listeners, familiar with legislative procedures, and adept at legislative drafting to make substantial contributions to governance.
Birla also reiterated the crucial role of opposition in a parliamentary democracy, advocating for constructive contributions that strengthen democratic processes. He urged MLAs to actively participate in committee meetings, calling them “mini legislatures” that play a vital role in shaping policies and holding the executive accountable.
