Patna, 28th Nov. A strong protest erupted outside the Bihar Assembly on Thursday as opposition members demanded the withdrawal of pre-paid electricity meters, citing inconvenience to the public.
Leaders from the RJD, Congress, and three Left parties gathered at the Assembly’s portico, waving placards and raising slogans, with some posters featuring a caricature of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar. Slogans such as “Not a smart meter, but a smart cheater” and complaints about inflated billing and sudden disconnections dominated the demonstration.
The protestors, primarily MLAs, vowed to continue their opposition, claiming that the introduction of pre-paid meters has made the government “hugely unpopular” and could lead to its defeat in next year’s assembly elections.
Despite the protests, the Bihar government defended the meters, calling them more efficient and effective in tackling power theft. The ruling NDA parties countered the opposition, arguing they had no moral right to criticize, given their failure to provide reliable electricity when in power.
As the protests intensified, the session began, but the opposition’s grievances remained unresolved.
