Georgetown, 22nd Nov. During his visit to Georgetown, Guyana for the 2nd India-CARICOM Summit, Prime Minister Narendra Modi engaged in high-level discussions with the leaders of Barbados, the Bahamas, and Antigua and Barbuda.
On 20 November, Prime Minister Modi met with the Prime Minister of Barbados, H.E. Ms. Mia Amor Mottley. The two leaders reaffirmed the strong bilateral ties between India and Barbados, focusing on cooperation in key sectors such as health, pharmaceuticals, climate change, culture, and people-to-people exchanges. Prime Minister Mottley expressed her appreciation for India’s leadership of the Global South and discussed the reform of global institutions.
Later the same day, Prime Minister Modi held talks with the Prime Minister of the Bahamas, H.E. Philip Davis. This was the first-ever meeting between the two leaders, marking a significant step in strengthening ties. The discussions centered around economic cooperation, green partnerships, and people-to-people relations. Both leaders expressed satisfaction with the progress of the Abaco Hurricane Shelter Project, which is being implemented with USD 1 million assistance from India via the UNDP.
Prime Minister Modi also met with the Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda, H.E. Mr. Gaston Browne. The leaders discussed opportunities for enhancing trade, investment, and capacity building, particularly for Small Island Developing States (SIDS). PM Browne reiterated his support for India’s permanent membership on the UN Security Council, and both leaders endorsed the seven-point plan to strengthen the India-CARICOM partnership.
