Hyderabad, 3rd June.
The opposition BRS, led by former Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao, emerged victorious in the bypoll for the Telangana Legislative Council from the Mahabubnagar Local Authorities’ constituency.

BRS candidate Naveen Kumar Reddy secured 762 votes, surpassing Congress nominee M Jeevan Reddy, who garnered 653 votes. An independent candidate received one vote, with the total valid votes polled amounting to 1,416.

The victory serves as a morale booster for the BRS, particularly after its unexpected defeat in the Legislative Assembly polls last year. Conversely, the bypoll outcome represents a setback for the ruling Congress, especially as Mahabubnagar is Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy’s native district.

The by-election, which took place on March 28, saw a delayed counting of votes to June 2 due to the enforcement of the model code of conduct for the Lok Sabha polls. The vacancy arose from the resignation of Kasireddy Narayana Reddy after his election as a Congress MLA in the Legislative Assembly elections.

Expressing jubilation over the victory, BRS Working President K T Rama Rao declared, “Winning the MLC seat in the Chief Minister’s home district is a moment of pride for us. This victory not only brings joy but also significantly increases our responsibilities. We are confident that this victory is just the beginning and will pave the way for many more successes in the future.”

Despite the BRS candidate’s win, State Excise Minister Jupally Krishna Rao asserted that Congress had achieved a moral victory. He expressed confidence in Congress winning the majority of the 17 Lok Sabha seats in Telangana, indicating the party’s continued strength in the region.
