Thiruvananthapuram, 14th May. There are just 17 days left for the Left Democratic Front (LDF) in the state to choose the winner of the two Rajya Sabha seats.
The terms of the three Rajya Sabha seats will end on July 1. The United Democratic Front (UDF) will hold the third seat in the upper chamber since the LDF is only able to send two of its members there. There is now a dispute inside the LDF on who would get the seat: the Kerala Congress(M) or the CPI. Three members of the Rajya Sabha currently represent the LDF: Jose K. Mani of the Kerala Congress (M), Elamaram Kareem of the CPI(M), and Binoy Viswam of the CPI.
According to sources, CPM will undoubtedly keep its one seat. It’s unclear who will win the other hotly contested seat—the Kerala Congress(M) or the CPI. While the KC(M) wants to keep the seat for himself, there are talks about granting it to senior leader Binoy Viswam. The internal party meeting will result in a definitive decision from the LDF.
Meanwhile, Leader of the Opposition VD Satheesan has announced that IUML will receive the third seat that has been allocated to the UDF. According to sources within the IUML, PMA Salam, the party’s general secretary at the moment, would probably be awarded the seat.
When the results of the Lok Sabha election are announced on June 4, the UDF will make a final decision regarding the RS seat.
The other Rajya Sabha MPs from Kerala are: AA Rahim (CPM), V Sivadasan (CPM), John Brittas (CPM), P Santosh Kumar (CPI), Jebi Mather (Congress), and PV Abdul Wahab (Muslim League), in addition to the three whose mandates expire on July 1. On April 20, 2027, Wahab, Sivadasan, and Brittas’ terms will come to an end. Rahim and Mather will remain till April 2, 2028, along with P Santosh Kumar.
