BJP Targets Congress Over NRC and CAA Stance in Manipur Ahead of Elections

Imphal, 1st April.
During this election season, the ruling BJP in Manipur has started a new attack on the Congress regarding the National Register of Citizens (NRC) and the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA). On March 1, the Manipur assembly passed a resolution urging the Centre to begin the NRC process to identify and deport illegal immigrants.

Continuing his criticism, BJP MLA Rajkumar Imo Singh mentioned that no Congress MLAs were present in the assembly when the NRC resolution was passed. He showed a 2019 tweet by Rahul Gandhi criticizing the NRC and the then Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB) as tools for polarization.

Singh explained that the Congress has always opposed the NRC and CAA, referring to Rahul Gandhi’s tweet from 2019. He also highlighted that the Congress MLAs walked out during the NRC resolution in the assembly.

In Manipur, tensions have been high between different tribes, with some communities supporting the NRC exercise to identify and deport illegal immigrants. Assam was the first state to implement the NRC, facing challenges with many people left out of the list.

The CAA, which aims to help minorities from neighboring Islamic nations get Indian citizenship, has also been a point of contention in Manipur. The state is preparing for Lok Sabha elections in April, with issues like illegal immigration, ethnic tensions, and opium poppy farming at the forefront.

The Congress candidate for Inner Manipur is Dr. Angomcha Bimol Akoijam, while the BJP candidate is Thounaojam Basanta Kumar Singh, the state Education Minister. Manipur has two Lok Sabha seats, with voting scheduled for April 19 and 26, and results to be announced on June 4.
