TMC Announces Candidates for Four Lok Sabha Seats in Assam, Disrupting Opposition Unity

Guwahati, 15th March.
In a move that disrupts opposition unity in Assam, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) announced candidates for four Lok Sabha seats, coinciding with nominees from other anti-BJP parties.

Via a post on X, the All India Trinamool Congress announced its candidate list for Kokrajhar (ST), Barpeta, Lakhimpur, and Silchar (SC) constituencies.

The announcement, made under the guidance of Hon’ble Chairperson Smt @MamataOfficial (Mamata Banerjee), named Gauri Sankar Sarania for Kokrajhar, Abul Kalam Azad for Barpeta, Ghana Kanta Chutia for Lakhimpur, and Radhashyam Biswas for Silchar.

Despite being part of the United Opposition Forum Assam (UOFA), TMC’s independent candidate nominations diverge from the collective strategy formulated by 16 parties under the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA).

With Congress having announced candidates for 12 out of 14 Lok Sabha seats in Assam, and CPI(M) and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) also fielding candidates, the political landscape appears fragmented. Moreover, discussions are ongoing regarding the Lakhimpur constituency, with the CPI expressing interest in contesting from select seats.

In contrast, the ruling NDA, led by the BJP, Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), and United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL), have finalized candidates for several constituencies. Notably, BJP’s nominations include candidates for 11 seats, while AGP and UPPL have nominated two and one candidates, respectively.

The unfolding scenario indicates a potential challenge to opposition unity, with TMC’s decision introducing a dynamic element into Assam’s political arena, amidst the approaching Lok Sabha elections.
