India has taken a firm stance against the fragmentation of the multilateral trading system and the inclusion of non-trade topics at the thirteenth Ministerial Conference of the World Trade Organization (WTO) in Abu Dhabi, which commenced on February 26.

Leading the Indian delegation on the opening day was Commerce Secretary Shri Sunil Barthwal, who underscored India’s support for the expansion of the WTO as Comoros and Timor Leste acceded to the organization.

During ministerial discussions, India highlighted the imperative of maintaining focus on trade-related matters and avoiding the incorporation of non-trade issues into the WTO agenda. Emphasizing sustainable development, India advocated for a holistic approach to combat climate change through initiatives like LiFE (Life Style for Environment), rooted in traditional values of conservation and moderation.

India raised concerns over the increasing use of trade protectionist measures under the guise of environmental protection and stressed the need for developing countries to have policy space to address their industrialization challenges. India reiterated the necessity for flexibility within existing WTO agreements to accommodate the unique circumstances faced by developing nations.

In discussions on trade and inclusion, India cautioned against the integration of non-trade topics into WTO rules, asserting that issues like gender and MSMEs are better addressed through national measures rather than international trade relations. India highlighted its efforts to promote inclusion through digital infrastructure and economic transformation for MSMEs and women.

India reaffirmed its commitment to multilateralism and underscored the importance of adhering to the rules-based global trading system, emphasizing the need for constructive dialogue and collaboration among WTO members.
