New Delhi, 24th Feb. On International Mother Language Day, the Kalanidhi Division and Academic Unit of the Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts (IGNCA) have launched an enlightening exhibition titled “Akshar | Shabd | Bhasha.” This exhibition, hosted at the IGNCA premises, pays homage to the linguistic tapestry of India, highlighting the significance of mother languages in shaping societal progress.
The exhibition, housed in the Darshanam I and II galleries along with interactive displays in the corridors, showcases the beauty and importance of mother languages. Darshanam II gallery features poignant quotes in 22 scheduled languages of India, each offering unique insights into the essence of its respective language. Meanwhile, Darshanam I and the corridor spaces offer an immersive and interactive experience for visitors, fostering a deeper appreciation for linguistic diversity.
Organized by the Academic Unit, IGNCA, as part of the Division’s International Mother Language Day Celebrations, “Akshar | Shabd | Bhasha” underscores the urgency of preserving endangered languages and celebrating linguistic heritage.
International Mother Language Day, observed on 21st February by UNESCO, aims to promote linguistic and cultural diversity worldwide.
The exhibition was inaugurated by esteemed guests including Ms. Lily Pandeya, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Culture, Govt. Of India; Dr. Sachchidanand Joshi, Member Secretary, IGNCA; Dr. Huma Masood, Senior Gender Specialist, UNESCO Regional Office, New Delhi; Ms. Priyanka Mishra, Director (Admin), IGNCA; and Prof. Ramesh Gaur, Dean (Admin), IGNCA.
The Academic Unit of IGNCA, established in 2017, endeavors to document, preserve, conserve, and disseminate Indian Arts and Cultural Heritage. Over the years, it has expanded its offerings from three Post Graduate Diploma Courses to twelve, alongside several Short Term Certificate Courses, reflecting its commitment to nurturing cultural understanding and expertise.
The exhibition will run until 29th February 2024, welcoming visitors to immerse themselves in the vibrant tapestry of India’s linguistic heritage.
