Former Maharashtra Chief Minister Manohar Joshi, a prominent figure in Maharashtra politics, breathed his last around 3 am on Friday due to age-related health complications. The news was confirmed by Joy Chakravarty, the Chief Operating Officer of P D Hinduja Hospital, where Joshi was admitted.

Joshi, 86, had been battling health issues for some time. His son Unmesh said that he had been under observation in the ICU following cardiac trouble on Wednesday.

Joshi’s health had been fragile since May 2023 when he suffered a brain haemorrhage, leading to his admission to the ICU at Hinduja Hospital. Despite efforts, his condition did not improve significantly, and he was later moved to his residence in Shivaji Park, where he received care.

Born on December 2, 1937, in Mahad, Maharashtra, Joshi pursued his education in Civil Engineering from the renowned Veermata Jijabai Technological Institute (VJTI) in Mumbai.

Joshi’s political journey began with his involvement in the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), eventually leading him to join the Shiv Sena. He played a pivotal role in the party’s growth, particularly in the 1980s, showcasing strong organizational skills and grassroots connections. His most notable political achievement came in 1995 when he assumed office as the Chief Minister of Maharashtra, marking a significant milestone for the Shiv Sena.

A multifaceted personality, Joshi was known for his managerial prowess, organizational acumen, and ability to navigate challenges within the Shiv Sena, where loyalty to founder Bal Thackeray was paramount.

Joshi’s rise from humble beginnings in Nandvi village of Raigad district exemplified his determination and resilience. Despite facing poverty, he pursued education, balancing studies with meals often sourced from neighbors.

Throughout his political career, Joshi remained dedicated to the cause of the Marathi community, advocating for job opportunities and skill development. His establishment of the Kohinoor Technical Institute underscored his commitment to empowering youth through education and training.

Diwakar Raote, a colleague from the Shiv Sena, highlighted Joshi’s significant contributions to Mumbai’s development, particularly during his tenure as Chief Minister. Joshi championed various initiatives, including slum rehabilitation schemes, aimed at improving the city’s infrastructure and addressing socio-economic challenges.

Reflecting on Joshi’s legacy, BJP national general secretary Vinod Tawde emphasized his role in strengthening the alliance between Shiv Sena and BJP, citing his close rapport with leaders like Pramod Mahajan. Joshi’s ability to foster understanding and resolve conflicts within the alliance was instrumental in their shared governance.

As Maharashtra mourns the loss of a stalwart leader, Manohar Joshi’s indelible contributions to politics and society will be remembered with reverence and gratitude.
