India and Saskatchewan Province of Canada Discuss Trade Relations and Agricultural Cooperation

 Minister of State for Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare, Shobha Karandlaje, held a meeting with the Premier of Saskatchewan Province of Canada, Scott Moe, at Krishi Bhawan, New Delhi on Wednesday.

The primary agenda of the meeting was to deliberate on Saskatchewan’s ongoing trade relationship with India, particularly as a consistent and reliable supplier of pulses, potash, agricultural technologies, and research partnerships.

During the meeting, MoS Shobha Karandlaje underscored the significance of trade relations between India and Saskatchewan in the context of India’s energy and food security. She highlighted Saskatchewan’s role as a dependable supplier of uranium, potash, lentils, peas, chickpeas, and semi-chemical wood pulp products, emphasizing that Saskatchewan is one of the largest sources of import of pulses to India.

Moreover, MoS Shobha Karandlaje proposed to explore cooperation in biotechnology, agri-tech, and wastewater treatment, aiming to strengthen knowledge exchange and technology transfer between India and Saskatchewan in sustainable agriculture through regular Technical Group meetings.

In response, Scott Moe acknowledged the strengthening ties between India and Saskatchewan, noting Saskatchewan’s contribution to partner countries in achieving energy and food security. He emphasized the importance of advancing the agri-food production system, promoting sustainable agri-food products, sharing innovation, and developing natural resources to ensure global food security.

Furthermore, Scott Moe highlighted the significance of the Global Institute for Food Security (GIFS) for comparative analysis and benchmark studies on sustainable agriculture. He expressed willingness to share technologies and best sustainable production practices with India

Both sides agreed to discuss and explore cooperation areas, knowledge exchange, and technology transfer through Technical Group meetings. They expressed support for continuity in discussions and regular dialogue to strengthen bilateral relations.

The meeting between MoS Shobha Karandlaje and Premier Scott Moe signifies the commitment of both India and Saskatchewan to foster collaboration in agriculture and enhance trade relations for mutual benefit.
