In a notable address at an event in Prayagraj, Chief Justice of India (CJI) Justice D Y Chandrachud underscored the imperative of broadening access to legal education across remote areas of the nation.

He lamented the existing disparity, wherein legal education predominantly caters to English-speaking students, leaving behind those in rural regions.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony of Dr Rajendra Prasad National Law University in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, Justice Chandrachud emphasized the need for extending university-level legal education to remote rural areas.

He highlighted the pivotal role of technology in bridging this gap, emphasizing its potential to reach students in far-flung regions.

Quoting the CJI, news agency PTI reported, “Technology has given us the ability to reach out to far-flung students. Despite developments in legal education, the contemporary legal education system favors only English-speaking urban children.”

Justice Chandrachud further cited a survey conducted on diversity in five law universities, revealing the challenges faced by students from diverse linguistic backgrounds in gaining admission due to their inability to converse in English.

The remarks from Justice D Y Chandrachud shed light on the pressing need to democratize legal education, ensuring equitable opportunities for students from all regions and linguistic backgrounds.

As discussions surrounding educational reform gain momentum, the CJI’s advocacy for inclusivity in legal education resonates as a pivotal step towards fostering a more accessible and representative legal system in India.
