The Students Federation of India (SFI) workers displayed black flags to Kerala Governor Arif Mohammed Khan in Mattannur on Sunday evening, leading to clashes between the activists and the police, resulting in their detention.

Governor Khan, en route to Wayanad to meet the family of Ajeesh, who tragically lost his life to a wild elephant, witnessed the protests while passing through the area. Simultaneously, a confrontation unfolded between the SFI workers and law enforcement in Mattannur town.

Alleging police mistreatment of the detained SFI members, the activists detained a police vehicle, exacerbating tensions. Subsequently, SFI activists staged a protest, vowing to continue their demonstration until Monday.

Earlier on Sunday, Congress MP Rahul Gandhi visited the residence of Forest Department watcher VP Paul, who fell victim to a wild elephant attack in Wayanad. Expressing condolences to the grieving family, Gandhi interacted with them, offering his support.

The incident sparked widespread outrage, culminating in a significant protest in Pakkam near Pulpally in the Wayanad district on Saturday. Rahul Gandhi also penned a letter to Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, urging decisive action in response to the tragedy.

According to Kerala Forest Minister AK Saseendran, the victim was attacked when the elephant strayed into a residential area near Mananthavady. In response, the Kerala government announced compensation of ₹10 lakh and assured a job to one of the victim’s family members.

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan instructed officials to convene a high-level meeting to address issues related to wildlife attacks in Wayanad, underscoring the government’s commitment to resolving the matter promptly.
