Chandigarh, 19th Feb. After the fourth round of talks between Union Ministers and farmer leaders, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann highlighted the farmers’ request for a guarantee on Minimum Support Price (MSP) for the purchase of pulses.
Addressing the media on Monday, Mann emphasized his role as an advocate for the farmers during the five-hour-long discussions.
“The discussions went on for five hours. I talked about the benefits for Punjab. We had asked for an MSP guarantee on the purchase of pulses, which was discussed today,” stated Mann.
He further elaborated on the need for a guarantee to be given, emphasizing the importance of NAFED, NCCF, and Cotton Corporation receiving a guarantee for five years.
“In which there are 6 to 7 decisions, this proposal has been given in which the farmers will take the decision and then they will go and discuss,” he added.
Mann urged for peace and urged consideration for the decision of the farmers’ union, to be announced tomorrow, even amidst internet shutdowns in some states.
Union Minister Piyush Goyal also provided insights into the discussions, expressing optimism about the positive suggestions put forth by farmer union representatives.
“With new ideas and thoughts, we had a positive discussion with Bhartiya Kisan Mazdoor Union and other farmer leaders…We had a detailed discussion on how to carry forward the work done by PM Modi in the last 10 years,” he stated.
The ongoing discussions come against the backdrop of various demands raised by agitating farmers from Punjab, including legal guarantees for MSPs and loan waivers. Despite earlier rounds of talks on February 8, 12, and 15, no conclusive decisions were reached.
