New Delhi, 16th Feb. Former Congress leader Ashok Chavan, who recently switched allegiance to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), expressed his optimism about his Rajya Sabha candidature, emphasizing the broader scope it offers to work at the national level.
In an interview with ANI, Chavan stated, “I am hopeful that things will work out well. By becoming a member of the Rajya Sabha, there is a much wider scope to work at the national level. More than that, I will be happy to associate myself with the party’s strategy, planning, and working.”
Chavan, acknowledging the upcoming 2024 Lok Sabha elections, mentioned that the BJP has entrusted him with the responsibility by nominating him for the Rajya Sabha. He asserted, “The election is around the corner in the country…They have to put responsibility on me, that is why they have given me Rajya Sabha so that I can take time out and move around in the country.”
Explaining his decision to join the BJP, Chavan highlighted the party’s growing influence nationally and within Maharashtra. He stated, “Be it the national scenario or the state, the BJP’s graph is increasing day by day. Better opportunities lie there. There is no readiness in Congress.”
Expressing gratitude towards Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other BJP leaders for their confidence in him, Chavan remarked, “I feel that the opportunity they have given me shows the faith the BJP has in me.”
Chavan’s departure from the Congress to join the BJP earlier this month marked another setback for the Congress party in Maharashtra, amidst a series of exits by key leaders.
Meanwhile, the BJP announced three candidates for the Rajya Sabha from Maharashtra, including Ashok Chavan, former MLA Medha Kulkarni, and Ajit Gopchade. Additionally, Congress defector Milind Deora filed nomination as Shiv Sena’s Rajya Sabha candidate from Maharashtra.
Despite the exits, the Congress remains undeterred, asserting that the departures will not impact the upcoming Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha elections, reaffirming their determination to stage a strong comeback.
The Rajya Sabha elections for 15 states, including Uttar Pradesh, are scheduled for February 27, with voting taking place from 9 am to 4 pm. The Election Commission announced the biennial polls for 56 seats, with results slated to be declared on the same day.
