Haldwani, 15th Feb.
The administration on Thursday announced a partial relaxation of the curfew in Banbhoolpura town, seven days after its imposition following violent clashes over the demolition of an “illegal” madrasa.

According to an order issued by Nainital District Magistrate Vandana Singh, the curfew will be eased from 9 am to 4 pm in the Gaujajali, Railway Bazar, and FCI godown area. In other parts of Banbhoolpura, the relaxation will be for two hours, from 9 am to 11 am.

The violence erupted on February 8th when clashes broke out during the demolition of the illegal madrasa in the Banbhoolpura area. Locals were reported to have hurled stones and petrol bombs at municipal workers and police, leading to chaos and endangering lives. The situation escalated to the extent that many police personnel sought refuge at a police station, which was subsequently set on fire by the mob.

The violent clashes resulted in the death of six rioters, with over a hundred individuals sustaining injuries, including police personnel and members of the media, as confirmed by the police.

The curfew, initially imposed across Banbhoolpura, had previously been lifted from the outer areas of the town, signaling a gradual restoration of normalcy following the turbulent events.
