58 Rajya Sabha Members Including 8 Ministers and Key Leaders to Retire by May 2024

A total of 58 Rajya Sabha members, including eight Central Ministers and prominent leaders like former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and BJP national President JP Nadda, are scheduled to retire by the first week of May this year.

The eight ministers, namely Mansukh Mandaviya, Bhupender Yadav, Parshottam Rupala, Dharmendra Pradhan, V Murleedharan, Narayan Rane, Rajeev Chandrashekhar, and Ashwini Vaishnaw, along with 47 other MPs including Manmohan Singh and JP Nadda, will retire by April 2-3.

Among these MPs, one will retire on February 23, while 55 are set to retire by April 2-3, and two, including Congress MP Dhiraj Prasad Sahu, against whom the Enforcement Directorate recently issued summons in a money laundering case, will retire by May 3.

The retiring members represent various political parties, with 28 from the BJP, 11 from Congress, and others from parties such as Trinamool Congress, Bharat Rashtra Samithi, Biju Janata Dal, Rashtriya Janata Dal, Janata Dal (United), YSRCP, Shiv Sena, NCP, Telugu Desam Party, and Sikkim Democratic Front.

Notable names among the retiring MPs include Samajwadi Party’s Jaya Bachchan, BJP’s Anil Baluni and Prakash Javadekar, and BJD’s Amar Patnaik.

The retirement of these MPs will have implications on the composition of the Rajya Sabha, particularly with the upcoming general elections. Presently, the BJP holds 93 seats in the Rajya Sabha, followed by Congress with 30 seats, Trinamool Congress with 13, and six nominated members, among others, in a house of 239 seats with six vacancies.
