Tragedy struck as a worker from Punjab, injured in Wednesday’s terror attack in Srinagar’s Habba Kadal area, succumbed to injuries this morning at SKIMS Hospital, raising the toll to two in the first targeted killing of the year by terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir.

Rohit Masih, the victim, passed away at SKIMS Hospital after being shifted there from SMHS Hospital late Wednesday night due to deteriorating health. The attack, which claimed the life of Amritpal Singh, another worker from Punjab, has put the city on edge with heightened security measures and appeals from authorities for heightened caution and vigilance.

Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha and political parties across the Union Territory have strongly condemned the attack, claimed by the banned ‘The Resistance Front (TRF)’, an offshoot of Pakistan-based Lashker-e-Taiba.

Inspector General of Police (Kashmir Range) V K Birdi assured intensified security measures while urging the public to remain cautious. Security forces have launched search operations and intensified patrolling, while random checks are being conducted across the city.

The incident reverberated in the Lok Sabha, with Congress MP Ravneet Singh expressing concern over the deaths of the two workers from his state, urging support for their families.

National Conference (NC) president Farooq Abdullah questioned the delay in holding assembly polls in Jammu and Kashmir, condemning the attack and its perpetrators.

In Jammu, activists of Rashtriya Bajrang Dal (RBD) staged protests, highlighting the urgency of addressing terrorism in the region.

Last year witnessed three attacks on non-local workers, resulting in casualties and injuries, underlining the persistent threat of terrorism in the region. Authorities are actively investigating the incident while ensuring enhanced security measures to prevent further attacks and maintain stability.
