Pune, 8th Feb. Police in Maharashtra’s Pune district recovered a stolen electronic voting machine (EVM) control unit and apprehended two suspects following an alleged theft from a revenue official’s office.
The Election Commission (EC) has instructed the state government to suspend the sub-divisional officer, tehsildar, and sub-divisional police officer of the area, initiating disciplinary action against them.
The incident occurred at a tehsildar’s office in Saswad on February 3, with CCTV footage circulating on social media. Within 24 hours, police retrieved the stolen control unit from two individuals in the Jejuri area.
Authorities have registered a case against the accused trio. Additionally, the EC has mandated the suspension of officials responsible for security oversights and directed the state to seek explanations from relevant election officers.
Chandrakant Pulkundwar, Pune’s divisional commissioner, confirmed the impending suspension orders.
