New Delhi, 8th Feb. Prime Minister of the Cooperative Republic of Guyana Brigadier (Retd.) Mark Phillips paid a visit to President of India Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan on February 7, 2024.
Upon the Prime Minister’s arrival, President Murmu extended a warm welcome, emphasizing the historical and cultural ties that bind India and Guyana despite the geographical distance. She underscored the shared colonial past and the vibrant Indian diaspora in Guyana, spanning nearly two centuries.
President Murmu highlighted the necessity for diversifying bilateral trade and enhancing cooperation in various sectors such as Ayurveda, bio-fuels, and agriculture, particularly in millets. She stressed that collaborative efforts in these domains could effectively combat the challenges posed by climate change and food insecurity.
Commending Guyana for assuming the rotating Presidency of CARICOM and the upcoming Presidency of the United Nations Security Council, President Murmu emphasized the importance of both nations as advocates for reformed multilateralism, given their status as prominent members of the Global South.
Furthermore, President Murmu lauded Guyana’s proactive stance and leadership in addressing critical global issues, including climate change, green energy, and sustainable development.
The meeting between Prime Minister Phillips and President Murmu marks a significant step towards fostering stronger ties and cooperation between India and Guyana, with a shared commitment to addressing pressing global challenges and advancing mutual interests.
