Thane, 5th Feb. Activists from the Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) on Sunday held a peaceful protest in Thane district regarding the Gyanvapi issue.
Local SDPI leaders were detained by the police for violating the prohibitory orders that banned gatherings. The activists, who were carrying flags and banners, marched through the main streets of Mumbra township.
A police official stated that notices have been issued to the leaders.
SDPI is the political arm of the banned Popular Front of India (PFI).
The protest was organized in response to a recent court order in Varanasi district, which granted the family of a priest the right to worship Hindu deities in the Gyanvapi mosque cellar.
The Archaeological Survey of India has conducted a survey of the Gyanvapi mosque complex, which is adjacent to the Kashi Vishwanath temple.
