Dehradun, 28th Jan. Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge will arrive in Dehradun on Sunday to address a public meeting and kickstart the party’s campaign for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections in Uttarakhand.
Senior party leader and former chief minister Harish Rawat expressed gratitude that Kharge had chosen Uttarakhand to call for a change. He stated that Kharge’s program is part of Rahul Gandhi’s Nyay Yatra, which focuses on justice for all sections of society, including women, unemployed youth, and farmers.
The public meeting was initially planned to be held at the Parade ground, but the district administration denied permission due to ongoing renovations for the Dehradun Smart City project. The Congress party accused the BJP government of conspiring to disrupt their programs nationwide, citing the disruption of Rahul Gandhi’s Nyay Yatra in Assam as evidence.
In protest against the administration’s refusal to allow Kharge’s helicopter to land at the GTC helipad, Congress workers staged a dharna (sit-in) outside the state police headquarters. After Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami intervened and the administration agreed to allow the helicopter to land at the Bannu School ground, the dharna ended.
Uttarakhand currently has five Lok Sabha seats, all of which are held by the ruling BJP.
