New Delhi, 25th Jan. Dennis Francis, the President of the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), called on President of India Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan on January 24, 2024.
President Murmu warmly welcomed the President of the General Assembly to India and expressed her appreciation for the important initiatives being carried out under his leadership, particularly in the areas of climate change and women’s empowerment.
President Murmu agreed that the chosen theme for the 78th UNGA Presidency, “Rebuilding trust and reigniting global solidarity,” is crucial in the face of numerous challenges the world is currently experiencing.
The President also emphasized the General Assembly’s potential to support the Global South, including the Least Developed Countries (LDCs), Landlocked Developing Countries (LLDCs), and Small Island Developing States (SIDS).
She commended the attention given to the reform of the UN Security Council, which is a critical issue for the Global South.
