The University Grants Commission (UGC) has urged universities to use handloom fabrics for ceremonial robes during special events like convocations. This suggestion was previously communicated to universities in 2015 and 2019.

The UGC said that clothing made from handloom fabrics is more suitable for India’s climate and also promotes a sense of pride. While many universities have already made the switch, some still haven’t changed their dress code.

UGC Secretary Manish R Joshi has urged universities to consider using handloom fabrics, as it not only fosters national pride but also supports the handloom industry and provides employment opportunities in rural areas.

The UGC has also requested universities to share their actions in this regard, including photos and videos.
