New Delhi, 14th Jan. Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Abhishek Banerjee poked fun at the grand old party on Saturday in response to Congress’s dismal performance in the North Cachar Hills Autonomous Council (NCHAC) in Assam’s Dima Hasao district, comparing their ambitions for seat share in Bengal to reaching the stars when they couldn’t even hold their ground in their own “backyard.”
After capturing 25 of the 30 seats up for grabs in the North Cachar Hills Autonomous Council (NCHAC) in the Dima Hasao district of Assam, the incumbent BJP was able to hold onto power there. The BJP received 55.52% of the total votes cast. In the NCHAC elections, the Congress received a blank vote share of 8.87%. In contrast, the TMC won 7.63% of the total votes cast, challenging the polls for the first time. “Despite contesting NCHAC elections for the first time, @AITC4Assam managed a higher vote share than INC, the primary opposition,” Abhishek said on his official ‘X’ handle. “One might say their seat share aspirations in the Bengal area akin to aiming for the stars when they couldn’t quite grasp the ground in their own backyard!” he said.
Of the thirty members of the North Cachar Hills Autonomous Council, twenty-eight are chosen by election and two are proposed. The Assam State Election Commission announced the results, which showed that the BJP had won 25 council seats, six of which were won by unopposed candidates and three of which went to independents. On Friday, the voting process started at 8 a.m. and lasted late that evening. Two of the forty-two Lok Sabha seats in West Bengal have been proposed to the Congress for the next general elections by the TMC, a significant member of the INDIA bloc. Sources claim that the Congress has requested more seats because it is displeased that it has only been offered two.In the previous Lok Sabha polls, the TMC won 22 seats, while BJP struck a surprise winning 18 seats. The two remaining seats were gained by the Congress. Prior to Mamta Banerjee, Akhilesh Yadav, and Uddhav Thackeray’s absence from the virtual meeting of the INDIA bloc earlier on Saturday, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge was unanimously elected as the alliance’s chairwoman. The position of convener of the alliance, which was formed to challenge the incumbent Bharatiya Janata Party in the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections, was offered to Nitish Kumar, the chief minister of Bihar and national president of the Janata Dal (United). However, he is alleged to have rejected the offer. Soon after the virtual meeting, Kharge reported that the discussions around seat sharing are going well.
