New Delhi, 14th Jan. The Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi today took part in Pongal celebrations at the residence of Union Minister, Shri L Murugan in New Delhi.
In his speech, the Prime Minister wished everyone a happy Pongal and observed that the joyous spirit of the festival could be seen in every Tamil Nadu home. All citizens should live in a state of perpetual happiness, prosperity, and contentment, according to Shri Modi. He also mentioned the celebrations for Lohri that were held yesterday, the celebration of Makar Uttarayan today, the celebration of Makar Sankranti tomorrow, and the impending arrival of Magh Bihu. All of the country’s residents received Shri Modi’s best wishes for the current holiday season. The Prime Minister cited the renowned saint Thiruvalluvar to emphasise the need of educated residents, moral businesspeople, and healthy crops in developing a nation. He also mentioned that during Pongal, fresh crops are dedicated to the gods, placing “Annadata Kisans” at the centre of this joyous custom. He emphasised how every Indian celebration is connected to the countryside, crops, and farmers. He thought back to the last time he had discussed the relationship between millets and Tamil customs. He was pleased that the superfood Shri Anna is becoming more well-known and that many young people are launching Shri Anna-related businesses. He disclosed that the promotion of millet directly benefits over 3 crore farmers who cultivate the grain.
The Prime Minister observed the custom of Tamil women drawing Kolam outside their homes during Pongal celebrations. She focused on the process, pointing out that while the design is created by placing numerous flour-made dots on the ground, each with a distinct meaning, the true beauty of the Kolam is revealed when these dots are connected and coloured to form a large piece of artwork. The Prime Minister drew parallels between Kolam and India’s diversity, saying that when people from all over the nation emotionally connect with one another, the strength of the country takes on a new form. “The festival of Pongal reflects the national spirit of Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat”, Shri Modi observed. He added that the Kashi-Tamil Sangamam and Saurashtra-Tamil Sangamam traditions, which document the enthusiastic participation of a sizable number of Tamil community members, exhibit the same attitude.
“This sense of unity is the biggest force to build a Viksit Bharat by 2047,” stated the prime minister. To energise and strengthen national unity is the primary purpose of the Panch Pran that I have invoked from the Red Fort. In closing, he urged us to recommit ourselves to the goal of enhancing national cohesion on this auspicious Pongal occasion.
