India Plans to Build New Airport in Lakshadweep for Both Military and Civilian Aircraft

India is planning to build a new airport in the Lakshadweep islands that will be able to accommodate both military and civilian aircraft. The proposed airfield in the Minicoy Islands will have the capability to operate fighter jets, military transport planes, and commercial aircraft.

This plan, which has been previously proposed but is now being actively pursued, will provide India with a strategic advantage in monitoring the Arabian Sea and Indian Ocean region.

The Indian Air Force will lead the operations at the Minicoy airport, which will also enhance surveillance capabilities and boost tourism in the area.

Currently, there is only one airstrip in Agatti island, which has limitations on the types of aircraft it can accommodate.

The development of a new airport and expansion of existing facilities have gained renewed attention following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent visit to the region.

Some politicians in the Maldives have criticized India’s efforts to promote Lakshadweep as a tourist destination.
