UNSG strongly deplores attack in Iran, 100 died

UNITED NATIONS, 4th Jan. UN chief António Guterres on Wednesday in a statement issued by the spokesman’s office in New York strongly condemned an attack in eastern city of Kerman in Iran which has killed over 100 people were taking part in a commemoration of former top military general.

According to media reports and Iranian officials at the scene reported that over 170 people have been wounded.

Media reports cited local officials said that there were two explosions as thousands were walking along the route to a cemetery in Kerman which is the final resting place of Qassim Suleimani, who was killed in a US drone strike in Baghdad four years ago.

The reports suggesed the roadside bombs were detonated by remote control, caused widespread carnage and chaos, in what Iranian authorities are described as a terrorist attack. 

Given the scale and size of the blasts, it’s likely that the death toll will rise, it added.

Mr. Guterres in a statement issued expressed his deep condolences to the bereaved families and the people and the Government of the Islamic Republic of Iran.

Florencia Soto Niño, UN Associate Spokesperson in a regular briefing in New York told journalists said “He wishes the injured a speedy recovery”.

Guterres called for those responsible, to be held accountable for the deadly blasts, the statement said

It noted that so far, there has been no claim of responsibility for the attack.

According to news reports General Suleimani was an influential national figure who was credited with building and arming a network of militias across the Middle East, including Hamas in Gaza and Hezbollah in southern Lebanon.
