Kolkata, 4th April. The Calcutta High Court ordered the West Bengal government to file a report on new clashes in Rishra, Hooghly district, on Tuesday after lawyers for senior BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari raised the issue before a division bench.
The court ordered Adhikari, the state assembly’s Leader of the Opposition, to file a supplementary affidavit on the incident.
On Monday night, clashes near railway gate number 4 in Rishra disrupted train services on the Howrah-Bardhaman main line.
After Adhikari’s lawyers raised the matter before the court, a division bench presided over by Acting Chief Justice TS Sivagnanam directed the state government to file a brief report on the new incident of unrest in Rishra. The matter will be heard on April 5 along with a PIL filed by Mr Adhikari, as directed by the bench, which also includes Justice Hiranmay Bhattacharyya.
On Sunday night, two groups of people clashed during a Ram Navami procession in Rishra, prompting the police to issue prohibitory orders under Section 144 of the CrPC and shut down internet services in the affected area.
The bench had directed the state government on Monday to file a comprehensive report on incidents of violence at Shibpur in Howrah city, as well as steps taken to ensure peace in the affected area, by April 5.
The bench had ordered the state government to turn over CCTV and video footage of the incidents of violence.
The court directed the police to make the necessary deployments.
Adhikari filed a PIL seeking an NIA investigation into the Shibpur violence, alleging that bombs were thrown during the violence, and he also requested the deployment of central forces to ensure Shibpur’s security.
Shibpur is under control, according to Advocate General SN Mookherjee, who represents the state.
