Praia Grande, 21st June: A tragic hot-air balloon accident in Brazil’s southern state of Santa Catarina claimed at least eight lives on Saturday, local authorities confirmed.
The tourism balloon, carrying 21 passengers, caught fire mid-air before crashing in the early morning hours in the city of Praia Grande. Emergency services from the state fire department rushed to the scene and transported 13 survivors to nearby hospitals for treatment.
Officials are yet to confirm the cause of the fire. A full investigation is underway to determine whether mechanical failure or human error contributed to the deadly crash.
The incident has raised fresh concerns over balloon tourism safety in the region, which is popular for its scenic aerial views. Authorities are expected to review existing safety protocols in the coming days.
