Amidst heated debates on Monday, six Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLAs, including Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari, faced suspension from the West Bengal assembly. The suspension came as a consequence of their protests within the House regarding the ongoing unrest in Sandeshkhali.

The suspended members, besides Adhikari, are Agnimitra Paul, Mihir Goswami, Bankim Ghosh, Tapasi Mondal, and Shankar Ghosh. Their suspension entails exclusion from the remainder of the current session or for a period of 30 days, whichever is earlier.

The turmoil unfolded during the question hour as BJP legislators vehemently voiced their discontent against the Trinamool Congress government’s handling of the Sandeshkhali unrest. The situation escalated as they resorted to slogans and occupied the House floor in protest.

Subsequently, Speaker Biman Banerjee acceded to Trinamool Congress MLA Sobhandeb Chatterjee’s motion for the suspension of the BJP legislators. The Speaker’s decision resulted in the immediate suspension of the aforementioned MLAs.

The unrest in Sandeshkhali, located in the North 24 Parganas district, has burgeoned into a significant political controversy. Allegations have surfaced concerning the forceful occupation of land and reported instances of sexual harassment by local Trinamool leader Sheikh Shajahan and his associates. Shajahan has been evading authorities since last month following an attack on an Enforcement Directorate team during a raid on his residence related to an alleged ration scam.

The situation has sparked widespread outrage, with numerous women in Sandeshkhali staging protests demanding Shajahan’s arrest and justice for the alleged injustices inflicted upon them.
