New Delhi, 29th Feb. Data collected at the AIIMS Trauma Centre in Delhi for the year 2022 has revealed a concerning trend regarding helmet usage among pillion riders on two-wheelers, with a staggering forty per cent failing to use helmets. This negligence has led to a surge in head injuries, according to statements made by Dr. Kamran Farooque, Chief of AIIMS Trauma Centre.
Despite nearly 85 per cent of two-wheeler riders adhering to helmet usage, the remaining portion neglecting protective gear has suffered head injuries, resulting in mortality or morbidity, emphasized Dr. Farooque.
The analysis, which encompassed data collected between January 21 to December 22, also revealed that approximately eighty-two per cent of patients brought dead to the hospital in 2022 were victims of road accidents, underscoring the severity of the issue.
Dr. Farooque further disclosed that the hospital received a staggering 53,541 trauma patients throughout 2022, with around 25 per cent being victims of road accidents. Notably, a significant portion of these victims fell within the age group of 20 to 40 years, which Dr. Farooque highlighted it as crucial for the nation’s productivity and economy.
Dr. Farooque emphasized the urgent need for an organized system to provide immediate assistance and treatment to road accident victims. He stressed that such measures are essential to mitigate the socio-economic impact of accidents, particularly among the most active and productive age group.
