Chandigarh, 17th July. Three young people allegedly made suicide attempts close to the Sangrur home of Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann as a form of protest over the state’s refusal to provide them positions in the police force.
Union president Jagdeep Singh said, two suicide attempts were made on Friday night and one on Saturday.
Several young people have been demonstrating near the chief minister’s house in Sangrur for more than a month now, demanding jobs in the Punjab Police.
Singh stated that Gurjeet Singh and Gurdeep attempted suicide on Friday night. Gurjeet was taken to a local hospital after consuming pesticide and was discharged after treatment.
Gurdeep attempted to hang himself from a tree, but was rescued by other demonstrators, he added, adding that a third individual, Jaswinder Singh, also swallowed pesticide on Saturday.
Jaswinder has been shifted from Sangrur Hospital to Rajindra Hospital in Patiala, according to Sangrur Deputy Superintendent of Police (Rural) Sukhwinderpal Singh.
According to the union president, they passed the mandatory examinations for the position of constable in the Punjab Police force in 2016 and were verified in 2017.
