Mumbai, 31st Dec: The Maharashtra government on Wednesday appointed senior IPS officer Sadanand Date as the new Director General of Police (DGP) of the state. He will assume office following the retirement of incumbent DGP Rashmi Shukla on January 3 next year.

An order issued by the state Home Department confirmed that Date’s appointment will be for a tenure of two years. After Shukla’s retirement, Date will be the senior-most IPS officer in Maharashtra.

A 1990-batch IPS officer, Date recently returned to the Maharashtra cadre after serving as the Director General of the National Investigation Agency (NIA). He is widely hailed as a 26/11 hero for his courageous role during the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks and has been awarded the President’s Police Medal for Gallantry.

Date has previously served as Maharashtra ATS chief, Deputy Inspector General in the Central Bureau of Investigation, Inspector General (Operations) in the Central Reserve Police Force, and Commissioner of Police for Mira-Bhayandar and Vasai-Virar.

He holds a doctorate in economic offences from Pune University and brings decades of operational and administrative experience to the top post of the state police force.
