Bilaspur, 7th Oct: At least 18 people were killed and three rescued after a private bus was buried under debris from a massive landslide in Bilaspur late Tuesday evening. The bus, carrying around 30–35 passengers, was traveling from Rohtak, Haryana, to Ghumarwin when heavy rain triggered the hill to collapse onto it.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced compensation of Rs 2 lakh from the PM National Relief Fund to the families of the deceased and Rs 50,000 to the injured. “Saddened by the loss of lives… My thoughts are with the affected people and their families,” the PMO said.
Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu expressed grief and directed authorities to conduct rescue operations. A video from the site showed a JCB clearing debris while locals assisted in rescuing passengers. Three children were rescued and taken to a hospital in Berthin for treatment.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah confirmed that NDRF teams are leading rescue efforts, expressing condolences and praying for the speedy recovery of the injured. President Droupadi Murmu also extended her condolences and prayed for the victims’ recovery.
The accident occurred near Bhallu Bridge in the Bhalughat area of the Jhandutta assembly segment. MLA Jeet Ram Katwal visited the site to oversee ongoing rescue operations. Authorities are continuing efforts to search for anyone trapped under the debris.
