Kolkata, 16th Feb. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee addressed the assembly on Thursday, providing updates on the Sandeshkhali violence case and the ongoing efforts to bring perpetrators to justice.
Banerjee affirmed the government’s commitment to ensuring accountability, stating, “So far we have arrested 17 people in the Sandeshkhali case. We are looking into the situation; no one involved in any wrongdoing will be spared.” She emphasized that she has dispatched the state women’s commission and formed a dedicated police team for Sandeshkhali to address the situation promptly.
Asserting her stance against injustice, Banerjee declared, “I have never permitted and will never permit any form of injustice to prevail.”
While the identities of fourteen individuals remain undisclosed, former CPI (M) MLA Nirapada Sardar and local BJP leader Bikash Singh are among those arrested for their alleged involvement in the violent protests. Additionally, Uttam Sardar, a suspended TMC leader, has been arrested based on complaints of torture and atrocities by villagers.
The protests, now in their seventh day, have witnessed active participation from women demonstrators demanding the arrest of TMC leader Shajahan Sheikh and his associates. Allegations against Sheikh and his cohorts include land grabbing and sexual harassment.
Sheikh has been missing since January 5, following an attack on Enforcement Directorate officers during a raid at his residence in connection with an alleged ration scam. His associate Sibhu Hazra is also currently evading authorities.
