‘12th Fail’ Wins Best Feature Film at 71st National Film Awards

Shah Rukh Khan, Vikrant Massey Share Best Actor; Sudipto Sen Wins Best Director for ‘The Kerala Story’.

 The 71st National Film Awards for 2023 were announced today, with Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s critically acclaimed film 12th Fail winning the top honour of Best Feature Film. The awards were announced by the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting, with a jury chaired by renowned filmmaker Ashutosh Gowariker.

The Best Actor award was shared between two Hindi film actors: Shah Rukh Khan for his performance in Jawan and Vikrant Massey for his role in the Best Feature Film winner, 12th Fail. The Best Actress award went to Rani Mukerji for her powerful portrayal in Mrs. Chatterjee V/s Norway.

Other major awards included:

  • Best Direction: Sudipto Sen for The Kerala Story
  • Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment: Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani, directed by Karan Johar.
  • Best Film in AVGC (Animation, Visual Effects, Gaming & Comic): Hanu-Man (Telugu), with its director Prasanth Varma also winning.
  • Best Non-Feature Film: Flowering Man (Hindi), produced by the Film and Television Institute of India.
  • Best Biographical / Historical Reconstruction Film: This was shared between Mo Bou, Mo Gaan (Odia) and Lentina Ao – A Light on the Eastern Horizon (English).

The award for Best Film Critic was given to Utpal Datta for his work in Assamese cinema. The full list of awards also highlighted several regional films, with Kathal: A Jackfruit Mystery winning Best Hindi Film and Parking winning Best Tamil Film.
