According to officials, the blaze erupted between 2:30 am and 3:00 am in the intensive care unit where critically ill patients were undergoing treatment. The staff members sustained injuries while attempting to rescue patients trapped inside the ward.

Multiple fire engines rushed to the spot and launched rescue and firefighting operations at the hospital, which is one of the largest state-run medical facilities in Odisha.

Following the incident, Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi visited the hospital along with Health Minister Mukesh Mahaling to review the situation and assess the condition of injured patients.

Officials said a total of 23 patients were shifted to other departments and ICUs after the fire broke out. While seven critically ill patients died during the process of being moved to other wards, three more patients succumbed later, taking the death toll to ten.

“The fire broke out in the trauma ICU early morning. Seven serious patients died while being shifted to other ICUs and wards, while three more died later. I have directed the concerned officers to ensure proper treatment of the injured,” Chief Minister Majhi told reporters.

The Chief Minister also announced compensation of ₹25 lakh for the families of each deceased patient.

In addition, the state government has ordered a judicial probe into the incident to determine the cause of the fire and identify any lapses in safety measures at the hospital.

Authorities said further investigations are underway, while medical teams continue to treat the injured staff members and patients affected by the tragedy.
