President Volodymyr Zelensky has proposed a formal agreement with the country’s allies in order to secure Russian compensation for invading Ukraine.
According to Zelensky, such a deal would demonstrate to nations planning aggressive acts that they would be held accountable for their actions.
“We invite partner countries to sign a multilateral agreement and create a mechanism ensuring that everyone who suffered from Russian actions can receive compensation for all losses incurred,” he said in his video address.
He went on to say that Russia is attempting to destroy as much of Ukraine’s infrastructure as possible, and that under such an agreement, Russian funds and property in signatory countries would be confiscated.
Zelensky emphasized the redirection of confiscated funds and property to a special compensation fund, saying, “That would be fair because Russia will feel the weight of every missile, bomb, and shell that it has fired at us.”
Zelensky described the bombardment of Severodonetsk as “brutal and completely pointless,” adding, “There’s hell, and that’s not an exaggeration.”
The last group of Ukrainian forces holed up in Mariupol’s Azovstal steelworks surrendered, ending a weeks-long siege, according to Russia’s defense ministry.
Last month, Canada announced that it would change its sanctions law to allow for the redistribution of sanctioned and seized foreign assets as part of compensation to victims or to aid in the rebuilding of a foreign state after a war.
