New Delhi, 25th June. As several MPs took their oaths in their mother tongues in the Lok Sabha on Monday, BJP MP Rajiv Pratap Rudy from Saran in Bihar expressed regret over not being able to take his oath in Bhojpuri. The Lok Sabha witnessed a diverse display of linguistic diversity as newly elected MPs took oaths in languages including Sanskrit, Hindi, Dogri, Bengali, Assamese, and Odia.
MPs have the option to subscribe to the oath or affirmation in English or any of the 22 languages listed in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution. Notably, Bhojpuri is not currently listed in the Eighth Schedule. Rajiv Pratap Rudy, who emerged victorious over Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) candidate Rohini Acharya, expressed appreciation for the MPs taking their oaths in their respective mother tongues.
Presiding over the oath-taking ceremony was Radha Mohan Singh, BJP MP from Bihar’s Purvi Champaran. Reflecting on the linguistic diversity on display, Rudy remarked, “Everyone is taking oath in their own languages and it feels so good… It would have been even better if we could have taken oath in Bhojpuri.” Addressing the Chair, he proceeded to take his oath in Hindi.
“I will read my oath,” Rudy affirmed, symbolizing his commitment amidst the diverse linguistic expressions witnessed during the ceremony.
