Who Will Rule Delhi? AAP, BJP in Tight Race as Counting Begins

GG News Bureau
New Delhi,8th Feb.
The results of the Delhi Assembly election will be declared today, deciding whether Arvind Kejriwal’s Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) retains power for a fourth consecutive term or if the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) stages a comeback after nearly three decades. The counting of votes will begin at 8 am across all 70 constituencies.

Several exit polls have projected an edge for the BJP, predicting it could win 45 to 55 seats, while the ruling AAP is expected to suffer losses. The Congress, which has failed to open its account in the last two elections, is likely to win just one seat.

Delhi’s Political Trajectory

AAP has dominated Delhi’s political landscape since its debut in the 2013 Assembly elections, where the BJP emerged as the single-largest party with 31 seats, falling short of the majority mark. AAP and Congress, with 28 and eight seats respectively, formed a government that lasted only 49 days, leading to President’s Rule.

In 2015, AAP secured a historic victory, winning 67 of 70 seats, while the BJP managed just three. Congress failed to win a single seat. The trend continued in 2020, with AAP winning 62 seats, BJP securing eight, and Congress drawing another blank.

Key Contenders in 2025 Delhi Elections

The three major parties—AAP, BJP, and Congress—are locked in a high-stakes battle.

  • New Delhi: AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal faces BJP’s Parvesh Sahib Singh and Congress’ Sandeep Dikshit.
  • Kalkaji: Chief Minister Atishi is contesting against BJP’s Ramesh Bidhuri and Congress’ Alka Lamba.
  • Malviya Nagar: AAP’s Somnath Bharti is up against BJP’s Satish Upadhyay and Congress’ Jitendra Kumar Kochar.
  • Patparganj: AAP has fielded Awadh Ojha to replace party veteran Manish Sisodia, against BJP’s Ravinder Singh Negi and Congress’ Anil Chaudhary.

The counting process is taking place under tight security at multiple locations across the national capital. The final results will shape the future of Delhi’s political landscape.
