Kolkata, 15th March. A court in West Bengal’s North 24 Parganas district on Thursday extended the CBI custody of Sandeshkhali strongman Shajahan Sheikh by eight days.
Shajahan Sheikh, who was apprehended on February 29 after evading authorities for 55 days, was the subject of violent protests led by women, alleging sexual offenses and land encroachment. His disappearance followed a mob assault on an Enforcement Directorate (ED) team conducting a search at his residence regarding an alleged ration scam on January 5.
The investigation into the allegations against Sheikh was initially undertaken by the state CID.
Subsequently, he was transferred to CBI custody following an order from the Calcutta High Court. On March 10, the court had granted a four-day CBI remand for further questioning.
