New Delhi, 20th August. West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose arrived in Delhi on Monday night, sparking speculation about potential meetings with President Droupadi Murmu and senior political leaders. His visit comes in the wake of widespread protests in West Bengal and a nationwide doctors’ strike following the rape and murder of a female doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata.
Governor Bose had earlier visited the hospital on Thursday, where he engaged with agitating junior doctors and assured them of justice. It is anticipated that he will meet President Murmu on Tuesday to discuss the ongoing crisis.
Earlier on Monday, during a Rakhi celebration at Raj Bhavan in Kolkata, where several women doctors and others tied rakhis around his wrists, Governor Bose reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring a safer environment for women. He criticized the current state of democracy in West Bengal, stating, “In West Bengal, democracy is degenerating. This cannot go on.”
Bose emphasized the need for collective action to protect women, saying, “Today, we have to take a pledge to protect our daughters and sisters.” He called for societal change to make the environment more secure for women, acknowledging that the mission to safeguard women had not yet been fully accomplished. “Our society should become a place where women feel happy and secure. We have failed in our mission to our sisters. This is the minimum a civilized society should do,” he added.
The governor vowed to support efforts to achieve this goal, recognizing the challenges ahead but expressing optimism about reaching the destination. “My responsibility as a governor is to serve the people. I know the goal is far and the road is long, but the march is on. We will certainly reach our destination. I am with you, I am for you,” he concluded.
