Bhopal, 7th March. A verbal spar erupted between BJP leader Shivraj Singh Chouhan and Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge on Wednesday, triggered by Kharge’s question into Chouhan’s resignation as Madhya Pradesh chief minister post the assembly elections.
Speaking at a rally in Badnawar, Madhya Pradesh, as part of Congress’ Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra, Kharge referenced Chouhan’s previous remarks accusing him and Rahul Gandhi of dismantling the Congress party as per Mahatma Gandhi’s wishes.
“Shivraj Chauhan had come to Gulbarga 15 days ago. He said that Kharge and Rahul Gandhi are working to destroy Congress….people asked me about Chouhan’s statement,” Mr. Kharge said. “I said, they should ask Chouhan why he was removed from the chief minister’s post, despite winning the election. What was the reason? What was the reason that Modi didn’t allow you to come close?” Kharge questioned.
In response, Chouhan took to social media to post a rejoinder, criticizing the leadership of Kharge and Rahul Gandhi for the repeated electoral losses suffered by the Congress since 2013. He highlighted the departure of numerous former chief ministers and prominent leaders from the party, suggesting a decline in its strength.
“Keep them counting, until only leaders that can be counted on fingers remain in the party. Kharge ji, now tell me whether Rahul ji and you are fulfilling Mahatma Gandhi’s statement that Congress should be abolished after independence,” Chouhan tweeted.
The exchange also touched upon religious sentiments, with Chouhan accusing the Congress of rejecting an invitation for the Ayodhya temple consecration ceremony, attributing it to a disdain for Lord Ram and Sanatan Dharma.
The heated exchange underscores the ongoing political rivalry between the BJP and the Congress in Madhya Pradesh, with both parties vying for dominance ahead of upcoming elections.
