New Delhi, 6th August. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Amit Shah, and Rajnath Singh were among the first to vote in the Vice Presidential election. The election of India’s 14th Vice President is currently underway at Parliament House.
The polling station opened at 10 a.m. today and will remain open until 5 p.m.
Former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, BJP President JP Nadda, Union Ministers Piyush Goyal, Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, Bhupender Yadav, Dharmendra Pradhan, and Tiruchi Shiva of the DMK, among others, voted. The counting will take place tonight.
The NDA’s candidate is Jagdeep Dhankar, while the Opposition’s candidate is Margaret Alva.
The Vice President is elected by the members of the Electoral College, which includes members of both houses of Parliament, using a single transferable vote in accordance with the proportional representation system. Members of Parliament are elected by a total of 788 electors. It consists of 543 elected Lok Sabha members, 233 elected Rajya Sabha members, and 12 nominated Rajya Sabha members.
Vice President M. Venkaiah Naidu’s term ends on the 10th of this month.
