Jodhpur, 26th Sept. Veteran Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and former Jodhpur MLA, Suryakanta Vyas, passed away on Wednesday morning at the age of 86. Fondly known as ‘Jiji’, Vyas had been bedridden for the past few months due to illness, according to her family.

A prominent figure in Rajasthan’s political landscape, Vyas served as an MLA six times, representing Jodhpur’s Soorsagar and earlier, City constituency. She began her political journey as a councillor and played a key role in the development of Jodhpur during the tenures of former Chief Ministers Vasundhara Raje and Bhairon Singh Shekhawat. Even during Ashok Gehlot’s time as Chief Minister, she continued contributing to the region’s growth.

Born on February 23, 1938, Vyas contested seven MLA elections since 1990, winning six of them. Despite her long-standing association with the BJP, she was not given a ticket in the 2023 elections due to her advanced age.

Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma expressed his sorrow over her demise, describing her death as a “huge loss” for the party. “Her passing is an irreparable loss for the Bharatiya Janata Party family. My heartfelt condolences are with the bereaved family,” he wrote on X, offering his prayers for her soul and strength to her family.

Governor Hari Bhau Bagde, former Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot, BJP state president Madan Rathore, and Union Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat also condoled her death. Shekhawat noted, “The passing of Smt. Suryakanta Vyas Ji is an irreparable loss to the social and political life of Jodhpur. May Lord Shri Ram grant her soul peace.”

Vyas leaves behind a legacy of commitment to public service, deeply influencing the political landscape of Rajasthan.
