New Delhi, 25th Dec. Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Tuesday chaired a review meeting on December 24, 2024, to evaluate the implementation of three new criminal laws at the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) in New Delhi. The focus of the meeting was on the integration of critical technologies and systems, including the Crime and Criminal Tracking Network & Systems (CCTNS) 2.0, National Automated Fingerprint Identification System (NAFIS), and the Inter-Operable Criminal Justice System (ICJS) 2.0, which aims to streamline the criminal justice process across the country.
Shah emphasized the importance of leveraging technology to enhance the efficiency and transparency of criminal proceedings. He urged NCRB to ensure the complete integration of the new criminal laws into ICJS 2.0, allowing for a seamless flow of data across various sectors of law enforcement and the judiciary.
The Union Home Minister instructed that alerts be generated at predetermined stages and timelines for all criminal cases, from the filing of an FIR to the final disposal of cases. This will help both victims and complainants track the progress of their cases and expedite the investigation process. He also recommended that regular interactions be held with senior police officials across states and Union Territories to monitor the progress of CCTNS and ICJS projects.
Amit Shah further advocated for the use of biometric technology to identify unidentified bodies and missing persons, as well as the creation of a data-sharing platform for investigation officers and other stakeholders in the criminal justice system.
The meeting was attended by Union Home Secretary, the Director of NCRB, and senior officials from the Ministry of Home Affairs, NCRB, and the National Informatics Centre (NIC).
The Union Home Minister lauded the NCRB’s efforts in implementing the National Automated Fingerprint Identification System (NAFIS) and stressed that continuous support and guidance should be provided to states and Union Territories for the successful adoption of these systems.
