Washington D.C./New Delhi/Islamabad, 10th May: The United States is actively pushing for de-escalation between India and Pakistan as military tensions continue to rise along the border following recent attacks and counter-strikes. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio spoke with Pakistani Army Chief General Asim Munir on Friday, urging restraint from both sides and offering American assistance to initiate “constructive talks” aimed at avoiding future conflicts.
A statement from Spokesperson Tammy Bruce and the Department of State confirmed Rubio’s call with General Munir, reiterating the US appeal for de-escalation and the offer of help for dialogue.
This diplomatic push comes amidst a significant intensification of military actions, including India’s strike on nine terror sites in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) under ‘Operation Sindoor’ early Wednesday – a retaliation for the April 22 Pahalgam massacre which had cross-border links. Pakistan has since engaged in repeated ceasefire violations and attempted numerous drone attacks in Indian border areas, including a wave of drone strikes on Friday night targeting 26 locations across India that the Indian Ministry of Defence confirmed were successfully intercepted and neutralised.
Earlier on Friday, the White House conveyed President Donald Trump’s desire to see the conflict de-escalate “as quickly as possible.” Leavitt, a White House speaker, noted that the President understands the decades-long history of conflict but “has good relationships” with the leaders of both countries. Leavitt added that Secretary Rubio and the National Security Advisor have been “very much involved” and in “constant communication with the leaders of both countries, trying to bring this conflict to an end.”
Notably, Secretary Rubio had held separate conversations on Thursday with India’s External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. In those calls, Rubio stressed the importance of de-escalation and urged Pakistan specifically to take concrete action to end all support for terrorist organizations. During his conversation with Rubio, EAM Jaishankar firmly stated that India would resolutely respond to any attempts by Pakistan to further escalate the situation.
